It’s not a stretch to say that diseases caused by insects are some of the most virulent and deadly on earth. In 2018 alone, 405,000 people died from malaria, a disease transmitted by a mosquito. Other diseases caused by pests are too numerous to list here, but the professionals at Sorenson Pest Control are experts in controlling and eliminating many of the bugs and beasties that enter the home and spread disease. Here are some insects that cause health hazards:
If diseases carried by all other contagious bugs in the world were wiped out, the list of those carried by mosquitoes would still be extensive. Only the females bite and pass on diseases, and she only bites because she needs a blood meal to lay her eggs. But at the same time she’s getting a meal, pathogens are being transferred into her victim through her saliva. These pathogens and parasites include:
- These are the parasites that cause malaria. There are over 100 species of this parasite, including P. vivax, P ovale, P malariae and P. falciparum.
- the virus that causes West Nile fever
- the virus that causes Zika
- the virus that causes Dengue fever
- the CHIKV virus that causes Chikungunya
- the virus that causes Yellow fever
- Francisella tularensis, the bacteria that causes Tularemia
- the parasite that causes lymphatic filariasis
- arborviruses, some of which cause encephalitis
These grayish brown, black, flat-bodied bugs are also called kissing bugs or vampire bugs because they suck blood from around people’s mouths as they sleep. As they do so, they transmit a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease. These are flat bodied bugs that are 1/2 inch to 1 inch long.
Fleas are notorious for spreading the bacteria that causes bubonic plague, but that’s of least concern to people living in the United States. More common is murine typhus, which has been seen in the southwestern states. Fleas also spread tularemia, and their bites can raise itchy rashes.
While houseflies don’t directly cause disease, their habit of visiting materials such as fecal matter, dead animals and rotten food makes them disease vectors. These diseases include typhoid fever and cholera.
Ticks are not insects, but they are responsible for a variety of diseases caused by pests, some of them serious. Ticks are responsible for Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Powassan virus disease, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi and tularemia, which can also be transmitted by mosquito.
