The idea of lice in a child’s hair can be unsettling for any parent. But, if you think there is a chance that your child might have lice, it is essential to check your child’s head and take action if necessary. Here are some helpful hints on how to check your child for lice.

Be on the Lookout for Symptoms

Children who have lice exhibit specific telltale signs. So, be on the lookout for the following symptoms:

Inspect Your Child’s Hair

Use a comb and a magnifying glass to look closely at your child’s scalp. Start your inspection at the base of the neck. Divide your child’s hair into small sections and look carefully for lice and lice eggs. Pay close attention to the areas behind the ears and nape of the neck. Also, look for sores or a rash near where your child has been scratching.

Look for Movement

This step is difficult, as movement in the hair is hard to see. But, look for signs of movement in your child’s hair.

Look for Eggs

Lice eggs, also known as Nits, are white or yellow teardrop-shaped sacs that get attached to hair follicles near the scalp. They may be there even if you cannot see them so feel around for them. If you feel something that seems like grains of sand, you have found them and need to take action.

Make Sure the Nits are Alive

Nits are only alive if they are within one-quarter of an inch of your child’s scalp. If they are farther up the hair shaft, then they are already hatched and could possibly already be dead.

Searching for Lice on Wet Hair

If you cannot tell if your child’s hair has lice when it is dry, try the following steps on wet hair.

Using either the dry hair or wet hair method should give you a good indication as to whether or not your child has lice. If you cannot tell, it is best to go to a doctor or lice salon to get a definitive answer. If your child is infested, treat everyone in the house for it to make sure they are completely gone from your house.
