Is Your Home as Prepared for Vacation as You Are?

While you may not realize it, pests are much smarter than given credit. They are well aware of when there’s no activity inside your home. They wait for these times to become the most active, creating the worst problems when no one’s around. Because of this, going on vacation can be a drag upon your return. That is, unless you take the time to prepare your home.

When planning to leave for vacation, it’s important to invest additional time making sure your home is safe. Yes, lock doors and close all of the windows. That being said, you also need to make sure your home is ready for the pests who may be visiting. The following are just a few steps you can take to guard against nasty critters.

Don’t leave out trash or food.

While this may seem like a no brainer, it’s often one of the steps overlooked as families head out in a rush. Many homes have fruit on the counter. Place them in the fridge. Anything that is left out needs to be sealed in an airtight containe

Empty every trash bin you have in your home. Having a bag in the container is fine, simply make sure it’s completely empty. It may also be a good idea to spray the containers with Febreeze or another air sanitizer.

Repair any leaky faucets.

Moisture will attract pests almost as much as a full trash container. Similar to humans, many pests can not live without a water supply. If your faucet is leaking, you could be setting yourself up to come home to a nightmare.

If you have a leaky faucet, do whatever needs to be done to correct the issue before leaving. If you’ll be away for more than two or three days, you may consider turning your water off altogether. Another huge no-no. Under no circumstances leave a pot, pan or another dish soaking in the sink while you’re away.

These are just two quick tips you will want to remember before leaving. Following these two suggestions alone will not guarantee your home will be pest-free while you’re away.
